Many people -
many needs

Planning and producing for public spaces is not only a responsible task, but also a demanding one. Public space only «works» if it succeeds in combining as many objectives and needs as possible.

The conflict of interest between owners and users of public spaces

Objectives of the owners

The owners of public spaces often simply do not want to have any "problems" with them. Planning must be sustainable and remain valid for many years. Facilities must be durable, long-lasting, low-maintenance and as unique and identity-creating as possible. At best, public spaces are also environmentally friendly, enhance the quality of the location and are also conducive to the positive image of a city.

Of course, the space should provide orientation in a simple way and guarantee a high level of recognition. The facilities should positively emphasize the importance and significance of individual city districts and make them perceptible. It goes without saying that costs and other expenses should be kept to a minimum.

Needs of the users

On the other hand, users see public space as "their" living space, as a retreat from everyday life or as a welcome catwalk for self-dramatization. They want to actively relax and use public space as a place to spend their leisure time. From their point of view, public space should be as diverse a place as possible for encounters and exchanges. It should be furnished in a sensual and clear way and at the same time allow as much individuality as possible in its use. Interaction between people, cultures and generations should not only be made possible, but actively supported and encouraged. In short, the public space should be a place where people enjoy spending time, feel comfortable and associate pleasant experiences and memories with it.

When it comes to good public spaces, the trick is to satisfy these two groups of needs at the same time. This seems difficult to achieve and it sounds quite exhausting, but it is absolutely feasible. In any case, planning and producing for public spaces is a very demanding and responsible task. But also an exciting and very meaningful one. After all, it's a great vocation to create quality of life for people and to create benefits and value for the public.
