Thermo ash, i.e. thermally modified ash wood, is an environmentally friendly alternative to tropical wood. Our wood comes from sustainably managed forests in Europe.
During thermal treatment, the wood is heated up to 250°C with hot steam, sometimes with the addition of oils. This changes the cell structure, which has various effects: The water absorption capacity is reduced and the swelling and shrinkage behavior of the wood decreases by up to 70 percent. It therefore works significantly less. It also becomes more resistant to fungal and insect infestation and the abrasion resistance of the wood surface improves.
The treatment gives the wood a dark, usually shiny color and a smoky smell that fades over time. However, the treatment does not make the wood UV-resistant. Pre-painting the wood surface helps to preserve the color and delay graying.
