Curved paths, walls and benches - inspired by the flowing movement of the Rhine

The new promenade along the bank of the Rhine in St.Johann near Basel measures about six hundred meters and is accompanied by a wall separating two levels of different heights. The upper section, which borders on the area of Novartis Pharma AG, was equipped with plants, BURRI benches, recreation niches and gravel. The lower level offers exit facilities and showers for swimmers for swimmers.

For this large project, Hager Partner AG commissioned BURRI public elements AG to manufacture ten specially bent Landi benches as well as two Landi bench-table-bench combinations, which fit in excellently with theecological context. Planed Douglas fir and hot-dip galvanized steel frames with a coating of micaceous iron ore make the benches what they are: modern special versions of the Landi classic from 1939.

The clients, the Canton of Basel-Stadt and Novartis Pharma AG, put the project out to tender and awarded it to the landscape architects of Hager Partner AG. After nine years of planning and construction, the rhine river promenade St. Johann in Basel was completed and finally opened to the public.
