Pixel meets concrete

The iconic Google magnifying glass shines as a neon sign on the Mobimo Tower on Hardturmstrasse in Zurich. This impressive light installation by Karin Sander is part of ART FLOW, a growing art project that will see two dozen site-specific works created in the Limmat Valley by 2025.

With this significant light sculpture, which can be seen from afar on the roof of a high-rise building, the well-known artist Karin Sander addresses society's approach to digital culture. For the first time, the globally known graphic symbol of the “point of interest” can be experienced not only in digital space, but also in real space.

BURRI had the honor of realizing this extraordinary work of art - an exciting challenge that combines craftsmanship with artistic vision.

The «POI» consists of a frame made of round steel tubes that form the shape of the iconic Google pin. Various cross struts and stiffeners stabilize the construction for the required wind loads on the high-rise roof of the Mobimo Tower. Eyelets are attached along the outer round tube, which in turn secure the red LED strips. These are wrapped in thin tubes to protect them from the weather.

The «POI», which will remain on the Mobimo Tower for one year, is controlled by a timer. According to the permit, the red pin may be in operation every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and its red high-voltage LEDs can be dimmed if required.

After its appearance in Zurich, the illuminated sculpture will be dismantled and stored - to reappear at another location. We are already excited - and proud to have made our contribution to this inspiring project.
