Tiger mosquito traps at Zurich bus station: climate change as a driver of innovation

Many buses from the south arrive at Zurich bus station every day, making it a “hotspot” for the spread of the tiger mosquito. This invasive mosquito can transmit dangerous viruses. Two new tiger mosquito traps have recently been installed at the bus station. These prototypes are the result of a creative collaboration between young designer Meret Jans and BURRI.

Tiger mosquitoes, originally from Asia, have reached Switzerland as a result of climate change and global trade. These mosquitoes can transmit dangerous diseases such as dengue fever and Zika. Meret Jans realized that a solution was needed. As part of her bachelor's thesis, she developed a tiger mosquito trap that works without chemicals and blends seamlessly into the cityscape.

Her trap uses only water, organic material and an adhesive film to attract and catch the mosquitoes. At the same time, an accompanying text informs passers-by about the danger of the tiger mosquito and raises their awareness of the issue.


BURRI as a production partner: from idea to reality

Meret's idea was promising, but the path from vision to functional prototype was challenging. BURRI joined her as a production partner to make the prototypes manufacturable and durable. Together, we developed six prototypes and made several important adjustments. The geometry of the trap was optimized to increase its stability, and the material was chosen so that the trap could withstand the demanding conditions in public spaces.

Our collaboration was characterized by creative solutions and technical know-how that enabled us to turn Meret's innovative idea into reality.
