The competition for the extension of the Limmattal Cantonal School was announced as early as 2017, and was won by PenzisBettini Architekten in collaboration with S2L Landschaftsarchitekten for their “Collana” project. The extension picks up the design of the existing structure of the school by adding two new buildings – Wing E (natural sciences) and Wing F (gym halls and assembly hall). These integrate harmoniously into the existing ensemble and together form a “string of pearls” of functional units.
The newly designed outdoor space serves as a central meeting point for students and teachers. It connects the different parts of the building and provides space for recreation, social interaction, and informal learning. The furniture was carefully selected to meet different needs and includes seating, tables, and shading elements.
The choice of materials for the outdoor space is inspired by the existing architecture. Robust and durable materials such as exposed concrete and metal were used to ensure resistance to weathering. The furniture was developed in collaboration with specialized manufacturers to combine functionality and aesthetics.
A well-thought-out lighting concept ensures both safety and atmosphere in the evening hours. The lighting highlights important paths and common areas, helping people to find their way around the site. Energy-efficient LED technology was used to minimize the ecological footprint.
The extension of the Limmattal Cantonal School was built according to the Minergie-P-ECO standard. In addition to energy-efficient buildings, sustainability was also prioritized in the outdoor space. The use of native plant species promotes biodiversity, and the selection of durable materials reduces maintenance costs.
This project demonstrates how well-thought-out architecture and landscaping can add value to educational institutions. The new outdoor space not only promotes user well-being but also strengthens the school's identity as a place of learning and community.
