BURRI public elements AG has installed custom made seating niches and Landi bench-table-bench combinations on the campus of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. The fabrication was carried out as part of a broader renovation of the university’s recreation and relaxation area. BURRI was awarded the commission following a consultation together with the academic institute on the furnishing of the outdoor space. The design is by Lukas Etzensberger, architect at Andreas Geser landscape architects AG.
Aided by many years of experience in both metal and wood construction, BURRI eventually put together a design for an optically floating seating niche. The connection between the wooden slatting of the niche and the steel of the framework is comprised of a small number of barely visible stainless steel spacers. Despite the lightweight appearance, the construction is extremely stable and can withstand all weather conditions. The design of the wooden slatting is similar in form and aesthetics to the classic Landi model from 1939. The natural wood used in the niche is native larch.
