Alpine GPS measurement station

Custom-built and solar-powered.

The latest cooperation between BURRI and ETH Zurich does not revolve around designer furniture, but rather an innovative network of GPS alpine glacier-measurement stations. The precise manufacturing technology and proven materials used in everyday life to produce Public Elements came into play in this project for the special manufacture of GPS measurement stations fit for alpine use.

The project was headed by Dr. Philippe Limpach of the ETH Zurich’s Geodesy and Geodynamics Laboratory. The measurement stations are placed on various Swiss glaciers for the surveillance of and research into slope instability and rock deformations e.g. in connection with retreating glaciers or permafrost. BURRI is proud to make a small contribution to a better understanding of the dynamics of the Swiss Alps and climate research.
